Wintering Spoon-billed Sandpiper resurvey in Myanmar
In January 2008, a total of 84 critical endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper was rediscovered after a gap of almost 130 years in Myanmar.
In this year, January 2009 Spoon-billed Sandpiper survey was conducted again at two sites in Coastal Myanmar namely Gulf of Mottama (formerly Mataban) and Rakhine (formerly Arakan) Coast. The Spoon-billed Sandpiper survey team has the ornithologists from Myanmar Bird and Nature Society, Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Association, Russian Bird Conservation Union, ArcCona Consulting (Cambridge, UK and Kiel, Germany), British Trust for Ornithology, Germany and Canada. A total of 63 Spoon-billed Sandpiper were counted during the survey. Fifteen Spoon-billed Sandpipers were counted at Rakhine. The team at Mottama found a total of 48 Spoon-billed Sandpipers. In addition, two and one new species for Myanmar recorded at Mottama and Rakhine respectively, which are Long-billed Dowitcher Limnodromus scolopaceus, Black-headed Bunting Emberiza melanocephala and Rosy Starling Sturnus roseus.
